Amusing NPR Story: When Does a Person Start to Boil?

Yesterday morning, owing to all the dreadful heat throughout the nation, NPR replayed a story that was originally aired a couple of years ago.  As their story goes, 232 years ago some adventurous souls decided to do some experiments.  They built a special room that could maintain a temperature well above the boiling point of water.  Well the story is delightful as is, so I’ll just link to it here:

Being a librarian, I wanted to track down the original journal article that gave the details of this 1775 experiment.  What is neat is that I found two of them and these articles are online full-text in JSTOR!  I’ve provided the bibliographic details below:
