Wiki-annotating – The Scientist – Magazine of the Life Sciences

This is a very interesting use of wiki technology by Richard J. Roberts of New England Biolabs in Massachusetts along with a biotechnologist (Martin Steffen) and a computational genomicist (Simon Kasif)  [Steffen and Kasif are affiliated with Boston University].   Their stated goal is to “create a database listing the unknown genes and predictions for what they do, and ask biologists to pitch in to identify their functions.”

Having just finished a study with some colleagues (Diane Covington of Carnegie Mellon and Bo Baker of University of Tennessee Chattanooga) that explored the use of Web 2.0 tools by biologists and physicists, this short article caught my attention immediately.  Our study is the topic of a short paper that will be presented at the Research Forum of the Science & Technology Section of the Association of College & Research Libraries during the Annual Conference of the American Library Association later this month.
